The track was composed and arranged in Ableton Live 8 and then mixed in Apple Logic 9 with the artful assistance of label-mate MobiusB (
mobiusb.bandcamp.com). Mastering by William Bendrot.
The production used Alchemy, Omnisphere, Reaktor, Stylus RMX, DubStation, Replicant, Eos, Volcano2, PSP Nitro, CrowdChamber, as well as Logic & Lives mixing & mastering plugins. Numerous samples were used including Numbers Stations, Air Traffic Control chatter, and found sounds.
"'Defect Pattern' started life as a 13 minute long tone poem. In many ways it was the culmination of a lot of things I learned as a musician in 2010. It was certainly the most sophisticated arrangement I had ever attempted. Yet it also felt more than a little self-indulgent and, although I liked the individual sections, it seemed aimless somehow. So it never got released."
"When the time came to create a track for the Ember compilation I remembered the tone poem & returned to it with a fresh vision. It has been worked & reworked to bring out the essential core of the track and the result is, I feel, much tighter and more interesting to listen to. I'm particularly indebted to Sister Savage, with whom I collaborate with under the name Elusive Gene
(
alonetone.com/elusivegene) for her help with the arrangement & also for her vocal contribution."
